Creating a Local UNIX Group

In addition to local UNIX users, you can create local UNIX groups on a virtual server. As with local UNIX users, local UNIX groups are specific to the virtual server on which they are created and are not accessible by other virtual servers on the Data ONTAP 10.0 system. You can use local UNIX groups for Windows-to-UNIX and UNIX-to-Windows name mappings. To create a local UNIX group, use the services unix-group new command, and specify a virtual server name, group name, and group ID.

The following example creates a local group named eng on a virtual server named vs0. The group has the ID 101.

node::> services unix-group new -vserver vs0 -name eng -id 101

Displaying Information about Local UNIX Groups

The services unix-group show command displays the following information about local UNIX groups:

  • Virtual server name

  • Group name

  • Group ID

Other information is displayed in a detailed view and if other parameters are specified. See the reference page for the command for details. You can specify the -members parameter to display the list of users for a local UNIX group.

The following example displays information about all local UNIX groups:

node::> services unix-group show
Virtual     Name       ID
Server
vs0         users      100
vs0         eng        101
vs0         mktg       102

Loading Local UNIX Groups from a URI

You can load one or more local UNIX users into a virtual server from a uniform resource identifier (URI) by using the services unix-user load-from-uri command. The URI must contain user information in the UNIX /etc/group format:

group_name:password:group_ID:comma_separated_list_of_users

The command discards the value of the password field.

The following example loads user information from the URI ftp://ftp.example.com/group onto a virtual server named vs0. Existing groups on the virtual server are not overwritten by information from the URI.

node::> services unix-group load-from-uri -vserver vs0
-uri ftp://ftp.example.com/group -overwrite false

Adding a User to a Local UNIX Group

You can add a user to a local UNIX group by using the services unix-group adduser command. The following example adds a user named max to a local UNIX group named eng on a virtual server named vs0.

node::> services unix-group adduser -vserver vs0 -name eng
-username max
Deleting a User from a Local UNIX Group

To delete a user from a local UNIX group, use the services unix-group deluser command. The following example deletes a user named bob from a local UNIX group named eng on a virtual server named vs0.

node::> services unix-group deluser -vserver vs0 -name eng
-username bob

Modifying a Local UNIX Group

The services unix-group modify command enables you to modify the group ID for a local UNIX group. The following example changes the group ID to 103 for a group named eng on a virtual server named vs0:

node::> services unix-group modify -vserver vs0 -name eng -id 103

Deleting a Local UNIX Group

To delete a local UNIX group from a virtual server, use the services unix-group delete command. The following example deletes a local UNIX group named acctg from a virtual server named vs0:

node::> services unix-group delete -vserver vs0 -name acctg
